Needless to say, the date trudged along laboriously.  I had committed myself to dinner with Naomi, and I was honoring that commitment to the end, but the shortcomings of her appearance cast an obvious pall on the entire evening.  When the waiter, during one of Naomi’s bathroom breaks, asked me, in all seriousness, “Do you think your mother would like some more coffee,” I knew that I was not the only one to notice her less-than-flattering features.  Finally, the check arrived, and after paying the bill, walking Naomi to her car, and kissing her hairy cheek, my first post-marital date came to an end.
